Welcome to Balmaitri Shishu Sansthan Trust —

These pages will heartwarmingly introduce you to village life in northern India

the efforts of one man, Mr. Rishi Kumar, to make a difference in many people’s lives. You’ll meet children who were not progressive due to a lack of education and resources as well as village people who are blind or disabled or under the effects of incurable diseases, and women who are widows and neglected by society.

You’ll also have a chance to get involved in the projects through volunteering, visiting the projects, financial support or simply by spreading the word about Balmaitri amongst your family and friends.

🌍 Global Support, Local Impact
Volunteers from across the world—America, Japan, Australia, and more—live at the hostel and work hand-in-hand with our NGO. They teach in classrooms, support educational expenses (including travel), and guide children in drama, music, and social campaigns. These activities are later performed in nearby villages to raise awareness on important issues like education, hygiene, child rights, and environmental care.

🤝 Together, we follow our mission: Save Child, Save Village, Save Nature.

🚌 A Journey of 100 Kilometers

Bringing Education to the Forgotten Corners

Every day, two dedicated school buses of Balmaitri Shishu Sansthan travel over 100 kilometers across rugged rural terrain, hills, and remote villages to ensure that no child is left behind due to lack of access to education.

These buses are not just vehicles—they are lifelines of hope, carrying over 50 students from some of the most isolated regions where proper schools, quality education, and learning infrastructure are virtually nonexistent.

🌄 Bridging the Distance Between Dreams and Opportunity

Our buses reach deep into interior hamlets, where families live in financial hardship and education is often a distant dream. Through this daily commute:

  • 📚 Children from tribal and remote villages can now attend school regularly.
  • 👧👦 A mix of students—some pay full transportation fees, some contribute partially, and many travel entirely free of cost.
  • 🧑‍🏫 Access to quality education is no longer restricted by geography or poverty.

🤝 You Can Drive Change – Sponsor a Child’s Transport

To continue and expand this vital mission, we invite compassionate individuals and organizations to:

  • 🚍 Sponsor transportation for one or more students who cannot afford even the minimal cost.
  • 💰 Support the salaries of our dedicated bus drivers, so that more children can be accommodated without worrying about transportation expenses.
  • 🌟 Help us increase the number of buses and routes, enabling more children from remote villages to access a world-class education.

🌱 Light a Life With Education

Every kilometer our bus travels is a journey toward empowerment. Every student who boards it is a child closer to breaking the cycle of ignorance and poverty.

Your support can help us turn these daily journeys into lifelong transformations.

🌌 Kacchapi

The World-Class Science Lab Empowering Rural Innovation

This lab is not just a room of instruments—it is a gateway to the world of science, robotics, space research, and environmental technology, right in the lap of rural Uttarakhand. Students of our junior high school gain hands-on experience with scientific models, real-world experiments, and project-based learning rarely found even in urban schools.

💡 Transforming Rural Education Through Innovation

As part of our NGO’s core mission—“Save the Child, Save the Village, Save the Nature”—Kacchapi plays a vital role in:

  • 🌱 Empowering rural students with exposure to global scientific thinking.
  • 🌍 Promoting eco-conscious innovation in alignment with our environmental goals.
  • 👩‍🔬 Inspiring the next generation of scientists, researchers, and problem-solvers from marginalized regions.
  • 🚀 Introducing concepts like solar energy, water conservation technologies, robotics, and astronomy through interactive tools and real-time learning.

🌿 A Rare Boon for Rural India

In most parts of India—urban or rural—students only see science in textbooks. But here, our students build, touch, question, and innovate. From creating working models of windmills to understanding the mechanics of space shuttles, Kacchapi becomes a playground of possibilities.

sponser’s child for education

More than 500 children from remote villages of Uttarakhand have received free English-medium education, computer literacy, and medical care through our Sponsor a Child initiative.

These children come from families living below the poverty line — daily wage laborers, single mothers, and parents struggling to meet even basic needs.
Education is a distant dream for them — unless someone like you steps in.

There are still many bright, deserving children waiting for a chance to learn, grow, and thrive.
Your support can turn their struggles into strength, their hopes into reality.

📚 For a small monthly donation, you can sponsor a child and cover their school fees, books, uniforms, and medical care.
This is not charity — it’s an investment in humanity.

🌟 How You Can Support:

1️⃣ Sponsor a Child’s School Education

2️⃣ Sponsor a Child’s Transport

3️⃣ Sponsor a Child’s Hostel Accommodation

🌸 Women Empowerment Council

Uniting Women for Rural Revival

This initiative empowers women through skill training, entrepreneurship, leadership development, and social awareness programs. By coming together, women not only uplift their households but also drive positive change in their society.

Our goal is to transform mindsets, inspire confidence, and build a future where every woman can live with dignity, independence, and purpose.

💫 Empowered Women, Stronger Villages

Let’s create a movement of women-led progress — where rural women lead the way in shaping a stable, self-reliant, and sustainable future.

🌸 Women Empowerment Council

A Collective Force for Rural Transformation
To uplift and empower women in rural regions, Balmaitri Shishu Sansthan Trust has initiated the Women Empowerment Council — a dynamic and inclusive platform that brings together grassroots women’s organizations, community leaders, and changemakers under one powerful umbrella.
🌾 Purpose & Vision
The Council serves as a common platform for rural and regional women-led groups to unite their voices, share resources, and collaborate on impactful self-reliance projects. These projects are designed not just to support individual women, but to bring economic, social, and emotional strength to entire households, villages, and communities.
Our vision is to spark a revolution in the mindset of rural women — encouraging them to dream bigger, lead confidently, and build a future where they are self-sufficient, respected, and empowered in every aspect of life.
💪 Key Objectives
Skill Development: Offer training programs in tailoring, handicrafts, organic farming, digital literacy, and more to promote income generation.
Entrepreneurship Support: Help women start their own micro-businesses or cooperatives with mentorship and financial guidance.
Social Awareness: Conduct regular workshops on women’s rights, health, sanitation, and environmental sustainability.
Leadership Building: Nurture local women leaders who can advocate for change and become role models in their communities.
Collaborative Action: Facilitate joint projects among different women’s groups to scale impact and promote solidarity.
🌍 Why It Matters
When a woman becomes self-reliant, she not only changes her own life — she uplifts her entire family. When many women come together, they transform the village. And when villages awaken, they reshape the nation.
Through the Women Empowerment Council, we aim to make every village a model of equality, resilience, and progress, led by the strength of its women.
👭 Join the Movement
Whether you are a women’s group, a volunteer, a donor, or a supporter of rural development — there’s a place for you in this movement. Let’s walk together toward a future where no woman is left behind, and every woman leads forward.

🌊 Save Water Resources – Every Drop Matters

We spread awareness on:

  • 🌾 Rainwater harvesting techniques
  • 🚱 Preventing water wastage in daily life
  • 💧 Reviving traditional water bodies like ponds, wells, and springs
  • 🚜 Sustainable irrigation practices for farmers

We believe water is not just a resource—but a sacred trust.

In each village, we educate people about:

  • 🌳 Protecting forest boundaries and natural catchments
  • 🪴 Organic farming and avoiding harmful chemical use
  • 🧱 Preventing land degradation and soil erosion

Plantation for Protection & Prosperity

🌱 What We Do:

🛣️ Roadside Plantation for Shade & Comfort

We plant trees along rural roads to:

  • Provide shade to travelers and school children walking long distances
  • Improve air quality and reduce road dust
  • Create a scenic and green corridor through villages

🧱 Landslide-Resistant Plantation

In hilly and disaster-prone zones, we plant trees and shrubs to:

  • Strengthen soil structure and prevent erosion
  • Protect villages from landslides during monsoon
  • Build natural barriers using native vegetation

🍎 Orchard Development – Fruits for the Future

We cultivate diverse orchards with varieties of:

  • Mango, Guava, Amla, Lemon, Papaya, Banana, and more
  • Supporting nutrition, livelihood, and eco-tourism potential
  • Engaging schoolchildren and farmers in orchard care and fruit harvesting

🌿 Why It Matters:

Our plantation drives are more than environmental efforts—they are community-building green revolutions. They bring people together, educate children about nature, and offer long-term protection to both livelihood and landscape.

Balmaitri Shishu Sansthan Junior High School

Save Child, Save Village, Save Nature

Rishi and Usha began the Balmaitri School and Children’s Home. On July 15, 1990 in a small hut on the side of a remote road

Balmaitri School was opened with only 7 students. The school is now brimming with eager students and Rishi and Usha have given these children and consequently their villages, the opportunity to change their lives, improve conditions in their villages and to help mother nature sustain us all.

The Balmaitri School and Children’s Home is located 18 km from Luxman Jhula near Rishikesh in the state of Uttarakhand, northern India. The school focuses on providing education to children from rural backgrounds. Thirty five children live in including orphans or children from single parent homes and all the children are from very poor backgrounds. Approximately 140 children attend the school daily from several surrounding villages, some walking up to 10 kms each day to reach the school. A contribution to school fees depends on the family’s ability to pay. Most families pay only a nominal amount or don’t pay at all.
